Users Stopping Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People using these drugs should be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Doctors believe the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

People who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," said one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Use

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle management.
